iOS 5 Features, Availability – Everything You Need To Know

iOS 5, Apple’s new mobile operating system, was shown off at WWDC. As expected, the new version includes a brand-new notifications system, and system-wide social integration. Here’s everything you need to know:

Features
Notifications Center: all current iOS users know that the current notifications system was showing its age. Apple has turned that around by building a new system, which unobtrusively displays all notifications at the top of the screen, even during games, and on the Lock Screen. By sliding them down, users will be able to visualize all unread notifications, or dismiss them completely by hitting an "X" button next to them. Very straight-forward. Notification can include missed calls, voice mail messages (which can be played right from the Notifications Center and even notifications from other Apps.
This system is very similar to MobileNotifier, which isn’t surprising, since the company has recently hired its main developer.
Notifications
Reminders: this feature, as the name implies, allows users to set different reminders for different times of the day, and different places. Thanks to the geolocation support present in devices, users can now configure Reminders to pop up a notification at a certain time and at a certain place, and even sync across devices using iCal. It’s really to-do lists on steroids!
Reminders
Enhanced Safari: The iOS browser now looks a lot more like its desktop counterpart, with a few extra features of its own. Tabbed browsing now looks identical to the way it looks on the Windows and Mac versions, with tabs displayed across the top, at least on the iPad. The new Safari also brings the Reader feature, displaying a website’s content in an easy text only view, but unlike what happened before, users are now able to bookmark content onto a "Reading List" for later or send it to friends.
Safari
Twitter Integration: as rumored, the new iOS 5 includes deeper system-wide integration with Twitter. While there’s no support for other social networks, this feature is integrated with many apps, including the Camera App, allowing you to quickly tweet out what you’re working on. You can log into Twitter from System Preferences. It’s a single log in.
Twitter
New Mail client: similarly to what happened in Lion, the iOS mail client is also receiving an upgrade. The App now supports draggable addresses, as well as the ability to flag messages and search them and dictionary lookup, by tapping on a word and selecting "Define".
iMessage: it’s like iChat for iOS users. It lets you send text messages, photos, videos and even have group conversations, similarly to any other messaging client. This application is also a great new example of how Notifications Center, since this App interacts beautifully with it. With this out the gate, I one is left to wonder what will happen to iChat.
Independence from computers: Previous versions of iOS required users to connect them to a computer in order to set them up, update them or sync them. iOS 5 will put an end to all that, by allowing users to update the device over-the-air. There’s also a new set-up wizard for new devices, allowing them to be configured for the first time without the need for a desktop computer. Can those who hate iTunes finally proclaim victory?
PC Free
Tens of small additions: iOS 5 includes a number of small improvements, such as direct game downloads in the Game Center, a new optional keyboard, enhancements to the Music App on the iPad and an enhanced Camera app.
Availability
If you’re a developer and have an iPhone 4 or 3GS, a 3rd or 4th generation iPod touch or a first or second-gen iPad, you’ll be able to grab iOS 5 from Apple Developer Center today for testing purposes, so you can get your Apps ready for many of the features we’ve talked about, such as Notifications Center.
Regular users would be able to grab the software for free later this fall. For more details, check this article.
Jailbreak?
Those using a jailbroken device must be warned that no jailbreak solution is available at the moment. Upgrading to the new software will break your jailbreak. You can read more about the state of jailbreaking on an editorial I wrote up yesterday.

Automatic Download Option For Over-The-Air App Updates Coming To iOS 5

According to Apple itself, iOS 5 will allow automatic over-the-air App updates. This was confirmed by the iTunes App Update page, which alluded to the new feature.

If you own an iOS device and have apps installed on it, you’re probably familiar with this page. You’re redirected to it whenever you select "Check For Updates" on the iTunes App section. As of a few hours ago, it had this bit of extra text

Currently, over-the-air updates are possible, although not automatically, requiring users to launch the App Store in order to get updates, which can be extremely time-consuming on slow networks. Automatic updating would make the update process essentially invisible to the user and still provide the same results. It’s unclear whether over-the-air updates would only apply to apps or to iOS itself as well, much like Android, Google’s competitor to Apple’s iOS.
While the reference to this feature has since been removed from iTunes, that didn’t happen before screenshots were all over Twitter, and later confirmed by credible people. There’s a very slight chance that we won’t see this announced next week, now that Apple openly disclosed it, although not intentionally.

This isn’t the first time that we’ve seen an Apple product being unveiled ahead of time by accident. In 2003, the specs of the then-unreleased PowerMac G5 were accidentally posted on the PowerMac G4′s page; and in 2006, references to iWeb, also rumored and unreleased at the time, were found on Apple’s support page. Both of those products were officially announced days later.
Last week, Apple confirmed it would be unveiling iOS 5, as well as Mac OS X Lion and iCloud, a new internet service at WWDC. While we don’t yet know any official details about those products, rumors of both iOS 5 and iCloud have been ongoing for months. It’s predicted that Apple’s new mobile operating system will include a new, less intrusive notification system, enhancements to multi-tasking and widgets, much like Google’s Android. Yesterday, we reported on a new artist’s mockup of what the new version of iOS should look like, based on the most popular rumors.
WWDC, Apple’s yearly developer conference, will kick off on June 6th. Although much of its focus will be to inform and train developers on the company’s newest software advancements, consumer products are often announced there as well.

How To Backup, Restore And Sync iPhone & iPad Apps/Games Data With Dropbox

One of the major irritations with the way iOS works is the inability to backup your app data without the need to connect your device to iTunes. Going one step further, wouldn’t it be great if apps across multiple devices could stay in sync, using the magic of the cloud?
If you’re the jailbreaking type, then you’re in luck!

A new app going by the name if DataDepost (free in Cydia) does exactly what we’ve all bee crying out for.

Have a brilliant city saved in Sim City and want to continue it on your iPod touch? Using DataDeposit you can back up your game data to Dropbox and pull it onto your iPod touch. No fuss, no mess.
What DataDeposit does is scan your device for apps it can back up and then allows you to do just that. What you’re left with is a folder on your Dropbox account with subfolders for each app.
DataDeposit is just another app that makes jailbreaking a no-brained these days – at least until Apple pulls its finger out!

How AT&T Tracks Unauthorized Tethering On Your Jailbroken iPhone, And How To Hide It From Them

If you cast your minds back a couple of months, you’ll remember how we told you that AT&T had begun clamping down on people using tethering on their iPhones without paying for the upgraded tethering plan. Emails and SMS messages were sent informing customers that if they continued to tether they would be charged for it. At the time we weren’t sure how AT&T knew which people were actually tethering, but now we do and more importantly, we know how to get around it.
Today iPhoneDownloadBlog pointed out a snippet from a post over on AndroidPolice that is of particular interest to unauthorized iOS tethering users. Turns out they know how AT&T was able to tell when customers were tethering.
“Jailbroken iPhones typically use the same tethering technique as a standard iPhone, the one that’s already present in iOS. This method exposes tethering activity quite readily, because the iPhone, when in tethering mode, sends traffic through an alternate APN (AT&T access point/router) for the express purpose of identifying the traffic as tethered data. This makes it extremely easy for AT&T to identify whether or not an iOS device is utilizing tethering, and just how much of their data is consumed via tethering.
Some tethering applications for iOS make use of alternative methods and route tethered traffic through the phone’s normal data APN, but by and large, most jailbreakers stick with the stock application because it’s easy to use and doesn’t require any complicated setup. In fact, many iPhone users jailbreak for the sole purpose of avoiding AT&T’s tethering fees (for why, see next section). These are the people AT&T’s is going after.”
So it appears, apps that use the special data APN get noticed by AT&T’s systems, hence the strong-arm tactics. Popular jailbreak app MyWi works just as described by AndroidPolice – using the tethering APN. What we need is an app that uses the same APN as your iPhone does for its own data. According to the iPhoneDownloadBlog, that app is PdaNet.

The latest version of PdaNet comes complete with an option specifically for hiding tethering from AT&T – presumable this option changes the APN the app uses for routing data. TetherMe is another app that appears to be one AT&T can’t track, though PdaNet does seem to be the best bet if you want to avoid your carrier’s tethering charges.
So, if you’re not too keen on paying for your data twice, jailbreak your iPhone and give PdaNet a whirl – it’s available via Cydia right now.

You will, of course, need to have a jailbroken iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to install it. Follow our step by step guide posted here to jailbreak your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with Redsn0w on iOS 4.2.1 (or untethered with GreenPois0n RC5), or on iOS 4.3.1 with Redsn0w, PwnageTool 4.3 (untethered | tethered), or with Sn0wbreeze on Windows, or on iOS 4.3.2 with Redsn0w, PwnageTool 4.3 (tethered), or with Sn0wbreeze on Windows, or on iOS 4.3.3 using Redsn0w, PwnageTool, Sn0wbreeze on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch if you haven’t already.

Jailbreak 4.3.2 Untethered On iPhone, iPad, iPod touch Using Redsn0w [How To Tutorial]

The iPhone Dev-Team has released Redsn0w 0.9.6rc13 to include support (except for iPad 2) for untethered jailbreak on iOS 4.3.2 using the same i0n1c’s exploit which was used to previously untether 4.3.1.
iOS 4.3.2 was originally jailbroken last week using PwnageTool bundles (on Mac) but it was limited to tethered boot. But now with this latest version of Redsn0w, you can jailbreak your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch fully untethered on the latest iOS 4.3.2 firmware.
NOTE: Those of you who rely on a carrier unlock MUST STAY AWAY from Redsn0w and stock iOS 4.3.2 firmware.

How to jailbreak iOS 4.3.2 using Redsn0w on Windows and Mac:
Step 1: Download iOS 4.3.2 for iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. (download links given at the bottom)
Step 2: Update/Restore to iOS 4.3.2 firmware using the IPSW file you just downloaded via iTunes 10.2.2.
Step 3: Start Redsn0w and point it to the official iOS 4.3.2 firmware file.

Step 4: Now select “Install Cydia” and click “Next”. Optionally (if available), you can also select any other option you like.

Step 5: Now make sure your device is both OFF and PLUGGED IN to the computer before you click “Next”.
At this stage you will be presented with a screen where you will be guided on how to enter DFU mode. Quickly hold “Power” button and then while holding the “Power” button, you will now have to hold “Home” button too. Now after few seconds release “Power” button but keep holding “Home” button until installation begins.

Step 6: Sit back and enjoy while Redsn0w does the rest for you. Once done, your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch will restart automatically and you will find it fully jailbroken (untethered) on the latest iOS 4.3.2 firmware.
UPDATE 1: Redsn0w 0.9.6rc14 adds support for untethered iPhone 4 jailbreak on iOS 4.3.2. Download it from here.

How To Jailbreak iOS 4.3.1 Untethered With PwnageTool 4.3 UNLOCK [Guide]

The just released PwnageTool 4.3 can jailbreak iOS 4.3.1 on iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad (1st-gen), iPod touch 4G/3G, Apple TV, and at the same time will help retain the old baseband for iPhone 4 and 3GS users so that they can unlock using the existing version of Ultrasn0w.
If your iPhone doesn’t rely on a carrier unlock, you can use Redsn0w for both Windows and Mac to easily jailbreak your device on iOS 4.3.1. Complete step by step instructions can be found here.
Unlike the last release, this version of PwnageTool brings full untethered iOS 4.3.1 jailbreak for all devices except for the iPad 2. This untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.1 is based on an exploit found by iPhone security expert and hacker Stefan Esser, who demoed it on his iPod touch last week before handing it over to the Dev-Team to do the rest.
iOS 4.3.1 was originally jailbroken last week using PwnageTool bundles (on Mac) and Sn0wbreeze (on Windows) but it was limited to tethered boot.

Step 1: Download PwnageTool 4.3 for Mac.
Step 2: Download iOS 4.3.1 firmware. Move all these files to the desktop.
Step 3: Start PwnageTool in “Expert mode” and select your device:

Step 4: Browse for iOS 4.3.1 firmware for your device as shown in the screenshot below:

Step 5: Now select “Build” to start creating custom 4.3.1 firmware file:

Step 6: PwnageTool will now create the custom .ipsw file for your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch which will be jailbroken.

Step 7: Now follow the following steps to enter DFU mode using PwnageTool:
  • Hold Power and Home buttons for 10 seconds
  • Now release the Power button but continue holding the Home button for 10 more seconds
  • You device should now be in DFU mode
Step 8: Start iTunes, click on your iOS device icon from the sidebar in iTunes. Now press and hold left “alt” (option) button on Mac, or Left “Shift” button if you are on Windows on the keyboard and then click on “Restore” (Not “Update” or “Check for Update”) button in the iTunes and then release this button.
This will make iTunes prompt you to select the location for your custom firmware 4.3.1 file. Select the required custom .ipsw file that you created above, and click on “Open”.

Step 9: Now sit back and enjoy as iTunes does the rest for you. This will involve a series of automated steps. Be patient at this stage and don’t do anything silly. Just wait while iTunes installs the new firmware 4.3.1 on your iOS device. Your iOS device screen at this point will be showing a progress bar indicating installation progress. After the installation is done, your iOS device will be jailbroken on iOS 4.3.1.

How-To Unlock iOS 4.3.1:
Ultrasn0w 1.2 is broken on iOS 4.3.1. Wait for the Dev-Team to push new version of Ultrasn0w to unlock your iPhone (compatible basebands: 01.59.00 / 04.26.08 / 05.11.07 / 05.12.01 / 05.13.04 / 06.15.00).

iOS 4.3.1 Likely To Bring Battery Life Improvements [Early Hands-On]

Folks at BGR have got their hands on the-yet-to-be-released iOS 4.3.1 for iPhone 4, which according to them is a minor release and will bring bug fixes, along with some improvements to battery life.
One of our Apple connects just installed the unreleased and unseen iOS 4.3.1 build on one of our iPhones, and we’ve been playing around with it for a couple days.
… it really does look as if iOS 4.3.1 will simply fix bugs, hence the version numbering. Battery life seems a tad bit better, though that’s not scientific at all.
Full list of changes, as reported earlier, includes:
  • Baseband updates for the 3GS and iPad (original)
  • Fixed memory hang that results in memory corruption when reading large files from USIM file system
  • Fixed problem with NTLM authentication in apps and on websites
  • Fixed issue with the Springboard and 3rd party apps not recognizing the gyroscope on the iPad 2
  • Fixed iPad 2 jailbreak vulnerability
Apple is expected to push this update within one to two weeks. There is no word on whether this release will also bring Verizon iPhone 4 users on the updated 4.3.x firmware version.
